Topkapi Palace
Home of the Ottoman sultans for four centuries
Topkapi Palace was the administrative heart of the Ottoman Empire and the residence of its sultans for around 400 years. Built by Mehmed the Conqueror after 1453 on a promontory overlooking the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara, it is less a single building than a small walled city of courtyards, kitchens, chambers and gardens.
Today the palace is one of Turkey's great museums. Its collections include the treasury with the Topkapi Dagger and the Spoonmaker's Diamond, the Sacred Relics, imperial kaftans and porcelain, while the terraces offer some of the finest sea views in the Old City.

Getting There from Emerald Mansion
Topkapi Palace is about 800 meters from Emerald Mansion, a 10 minute walk. Cross Sultanahmet Square, pass Hagia Sophia and follow the palace walls through the Imperial Gate into the first courtyard, where the ticket offices are.
The walk passes the Fountain of Ahmed III and Hagia Irene, so leave a little early and enjoy the approach that sultans once rode through.
