The Basilica Cistern is the largest of the hundreds of ancient cisterns that lie beneath Istanbul. Built in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I, it once stored water for the Great Palace of the Byzantine emperors, carried by aqueducts from forests kilometers away.
Descending the stone steps, you enter a dim underground hall where 336 marble columns rise from still water. Soft lighting, dripping echoes and carp gliding between the column bases give the cistern an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city.
